Advanced specialist physiotherapist Glynn Davies explains why the addressing injuries before they become a real problem leads to a quicker recovery, and why they shouldn't be ignored.
The more experience I’ve gained, as both a Physiotherapist and a Sonographer, the simpler approach I take to the treatment of injuries. Most of us have active lives and we will all, inevitably, have annoying / niggling injuries from time-to-time.
They often follow a similar pattern to below:
Initially not bad enough to stop / change any of your training
Not really sure why they started, but delve a bit deeper and they are often related to some subtle / not-so-subtle change in training / footwear / lifestyle etc
Get more annoying the more we try to ignore them
Become really annoying then stop us playing / training
Take much longer to get better than we hope
Nowadays, when this happens to me or a client, I take an approach like this:
What changes have been made in recent weeks that may be contributing to the injury
How can we modify these to be able to keep training (without making symptoms worse) or do I need a period of relative rest?
Stick to this until symptoms improve
GRADUALLY return to full training
Simple to say, much harder to do.
This process is much easier to follow if you have an understanding of the type of injury and the contributing factors. You may well be able to work this out yourself, but sometimes it needs an expert opinion to go through every detail of your training, loading, work and daily demands, and make the modifications that allow you to repair and recover.
Here at Sports Physio Hwb, we are experienced, advanced specialist physiotherapists who have the knowledge and skills to help you do just that. To book a consultation, just get in touch.
